Review:

Identical to the I-Mate K-JAM, O2 XDA Mini S and the Qtek 9100. T-Mobile MDA Vario has a slide out qwerty keyboard and WiFi connectivity, running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 OS with a large touch sensitive screen which can be view in either landscape or portrait mode. It also has a mobile Microsoft Office making the MDA Vario a very versatile phone.

I've been using the Vario for a couple of weeks now and haven't found a lot of negative points. The major drawback of the Vario is it's processor speed of 200Mhz. Way to slow to watch or listen streaming media. But I don't mind, 'cause I don't watch television on my mobile. And programs don't close if you click the close button. They keep working in the background. So you have to close them from the memory tab in the menu. If you forget to do that, you might end up freezing. Another drawback is that the OS is in dutch. Oh well, in about a year I can change it into english. If I do it now my guarantee isn't valid anymore :( The 1.3 megapixel camera is crap. Photo and video are both crappy. It's really too bad they didn't include a better camera. The sound of the speaker (while using the phone or listening MP3) is a little metallic, but with the headset the sound is good. Too bad you can't use MP3 for a ringtone.

But enough about the negative points. Mailing with Outlook and browsing the internet with Explorer is ok. Can't open some high tech sites, but most sites are working. I've installed transcriber (wasn't included) and TCPMP and they're working great. Synchronising with Bluetooth is a hell of a job, but why bother if you get a USB cable in the package? Install the software. Connect the cable and it works. MSN mobile is a bit slow and sometimes it takes time to connect. But once connected it works great. Word, Excel and Powerpoint are great when you have to write your report on your way to school or when you don't have acces to a computer.

The USB cable is included in the T-Mobile package. Just like the headset and carrying bag. The bag has two big magnets to close it. I've heard some stories about the magnets destroying your bank card. I don't know if this is true, but I don't use the bag, so I don't worry. I have an old shoulder holster I used to use for my 8850 (yes, it fits) :) The screen protector in the package is a cheap ass protector, but I used it and for me it's ok. I think other people will complain about the loss of colour when they glue it on the screen. I say glue, 'cause if you look closely, you can see some glue residu under the protector. Luckily T-Mobile included a 512 Mb miniSD to store all of my movies and MP3. Because I use my Vario as an MP3 player.

I bought the Vario with the Flex20 contract of T-Mobile and unlimited internet acces (GPRS) for 20 + 9,95= 29,95 Euro. Well, I didn't bought it, 'cause it was free with a two year contract. I want to conclude my review by saying that the MDA Vario is the first mobile/PDA that is doing the things I want it to do. I've been waiting for hardware like this since my first mobile phone in 1992...

Positive:

- Mail
- Internet browsing
- MSN mobile
- Mobile Office
- qwerty keyboard
- Easy synchronising (with USB)

Negative:

- Slow processor
- Closed programs in the background
- Crappy camera
- No MP3 for ringtone
